Since SAFE’s inception, we have served Turning Point Community Church foster and adoptive families by providing financial help for tangible needs; assistance through meals for families with the addition of a new placement; prayers for the concerns and requests of the families; and emotional and spiritual support to parents. Some items we purchased include cribs, car seats, video monitors, breathing monitors, luggage for child leaving, eye exam and glasses, clothing, and a cleaning service for an adoptive family experiencing illness. We love to have our SAFE volunteers participate in this as well by writing letters to these families and offering support.
We are also committed to serving our local community’s foster and adoptive parents. In this effort, we have:
- Sponsored birthday boxes for children in The Children’s Home through a partnership with Monterey Church of Christ.
- Delivered Christmas gifts to children served by the Texas Family Initiative foster care agency.
- Started an open (to the community) support group for foster/adoptive parents, which meets bi-weekly at the church.
- Partnered with the Heart Gallery to highlight children in need of a foster/adoptive family at our church through portraits hung in the church hallways.
- Provided funds for a TPCC adoptive family to complete their home study during the private adoption process.
- Purchased adoption gifts for children within our church to celebrate them on their special day.
- Rented out a movie theater to provide a free showing of the movie Sound of Hope to our church community to encourage many families to get involved in fostering or to support families that do foster.
Our biggest effort to date was orchestrated by our own Summer Strauss. Through her dedicated effort, the addition of four Safe Haven Baby Boxes in the Lubbock community, all funded by Turning Point Community Church have been purchased and placed or are in the process of being placed. These baby boxes are put in areas within the community, like hospitals or firehouses, and give mothers seeking to surrender their infants a safe, anonymous option to do so. (See link at: https://www.shbb.org/ ) We were only the second city in Texas to offer the option of the Safe Haven Baby Boxes.
